Our Animals
Herbs Text

Our suckler herd is sealed which means that all animals are born and raised on the farm with no bought in cattle used. That way we can ensure that all animals are raised to soil association organic standards from birth and during their entire lives.

Castle farm cattle are raised entirely naturally with all calves left with their mothers for as long as they like until they are ready to graze.
The whole herd is allowed to roam freely around the farm feeding on the meadow grass and hedgerows. During winter months home produced silage is fed on an ad lib basis.

The herd consists of mainly charolaix cows with a bull being brought onto the farm each year for breeding. In 2004 a Meuse Rhine Issel bull was used for the first time with great success. This hardy and productive breed originates in the Netherlands and Germany and make for active, lively calves that are sturdy and disease resistant.
